A few web updates

Just had a chance to post 5 new images to the website.  I was going to also post some new behind the scenes videos, but somehow in the "trying to make our place look great so we can sell it" phase I'm in, I misplaced the tape with all of the G-Unit footage!  It will surely turn up soon though!  Alright, back to work... Hope you are all having a great week!

Random Thoughts

Well, I'm in a hotel room in LA right now, finally getting some time to update this blog, and I realize any interesting recent photos I could possibly post are sitting on my desktop computer at home, so I guess I will just have to type some random thoughts and experiences I've had lately.

1.  We found 2 brown recluse spiders behind a pillow next to our bed last week.  Freaked us out!  Here is one of the little crappers... davehillphoto.com/br.jpg   Demaree just called me to tell me that one of our new spider traps caught another one tonight.  Argh!!

2.  Our Nashville townhouse officially went on the housing market this past week.  We will be lucky to break even!  But hopefully it will sell soon and we can move back to LA!  (after almost 5 years in Nashville)

3.  I saw the new Indiana Jones movie this past week.  I think they bit off a little more than they could chew.  I was pretty bummed at the anti-climactic ending.  Indiana didn't have to make any big decisions or do anything great.  The temple just crumbled and they were kinda like "o, ok, lets go home".  But besides the aliens, I still enjoyed it.  (if this spoiled the movie for you, I don't care because if you haven't seen it by now, you aren't a fan) But ya, I'm watching The Last Crusade playing from my Ipod onto the hotel TV as I type this.  Those movies and Star Wars are still my favorites.

4.  What is wrong with me?  I had some free time today and I went to Samy's Camera and Calumet Photo here in LA to look at 4x5 field cameras!  They had pretty bad selections, so I'll probably have to get one online.  As I was there I couldn't help but notice all of the ad's for new medium format cameras and digital backs.  It looks like Leaf and Phase One now make their own cameras to compete with Hasselblad.  It's weird though, I really have no desire to keep upgrading my digital equipment.  I still have a Canon 5D, Powerbook G4 12in laptop, and G5 desktop.  I'm just really lacking any motivation to upgrade right now.  But man, that Leica 21mm lens looked awful tempting today!

5.  Actually, I do really want the Canon 35mm and 24mm 1.4 lenses.  I'd take a 1ds Mark 3 too.

6.  I just got a Nikon Coolscan 9000 this month.  Black and white portfolio to come soon?!

7.  I'm considering making some updates to my website.

6.  I just wrapped up 2 solid weeks of production for the upcoming G-Unit cd.  We shot in Brooklyn.  I'm really excited about these photos.  They will be up after July 1st.  Oh, and I dropped my Canon 28mm 2.8 lens while shooting backgrounds, so I replaced it with the Canon 28mm 1.8.  Pretty solid lens!

7.  Take a look at some of the recent SLAM magazine issues.  They are consistently showcasing modern post production as it's worst.  It's like a gallery of sharpening nightmares.  They are even sharpening all of the live game shots.  Disgusting. Please stop applying heavy unsharp mask to images and letting that be!  That's not good, and its not my opinion, it's a scientific fact, it's bad bad bad!  The more I see this stuff, the more I yearn for the Leica and some Fuji Acros 100....

8.  Blu-ray is annoying.  We finally got a player just to find that a lot of movies still don't come out in Blu-Ray, and to top it off, Blockbuster only gets one copy of each new release, so all the new stuff is usually gone anyway.  HD revolution my butt.... where are the Indiana Jones and Star Wars!

9.  I'm going to be releasing a tutorial DVD for $400 pretty soon.

10. Not.

11.  One of the reasons for lack of blogging this past month has been the fact that I just read all 7 of the Harry Potter books.  I quite possibly think they are the greatest piece of entertainment ever created.  I liked them better than the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  I've seriously been having Harry Potter dreams every night.  Do yourself a favor and put down the camera for a bit and read the books.  I bet your photography will improve because of it!

12.  Ok, back to the Last Crusade.... (Indy just crashed through the window to save his dad...)

Website updates

I just posted some pictures from this winter on my site.  I also added 3 new Behind the Scenes videos.  I wish I had more to post, but these will have to do for the moment.  I really slacked off with the video camera during the past few months.  I always leave it charging in my wall!

Long Way Down!

So this is going to be my first book review on the blog.  I happened across the book "Long Way Down" at a used book store this past month.  It chronicles the motorcycle trip of Ewan McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman, as they spend 3 months riding from the top of Scotland, down through Europe and Africa, and eventually to Cape Town, South Africa.  They have a ton of adventures, help out with some amazing charities, and have an altogether great time.  They actually road their bikes around the world a few years back, and I saw the DVD's of that trip, which were great.  When I saw that they went on another trip, this time through Africa, I jumped for joy!  For some reason, I'm really fascinated with Africa these days.  I also happen to love motorcycles, the desert, and Star Wars, so Ewan, Africa, and motorcycles in one... o man, so awesome!  I'd love to do something like they did, shoot a ton of 35mm black and white, and do a book.  Maybe someday!  Until then, I'll have to wait for my copy of the Long Way Down DVD set which is in the mail from the UK as I type this.  Ok, go out and have some photo adventures this week!  Here is a link to the book on Amazon.

Thousand Foot Krutch Video!

Two videos in one month!  Just finished a video for the band Thousand Foot Krutch.  They are good friends of mine and were good sports, letting me live out my directing fantasies by doing a war theme.  Check out the band here.  Click the image below to see the video.  Here are some behind the scenes pics I snapped in between takes.  Included is also a shot my friend John Adams took of a squib going off!  He timed it just right!

William Fitzsimmons Video!

Just wrapped up music video #2, with artist William Fitzsimmons.  I love his music and it was blast getting to work with him.  We did a "road trip gone bad" theme, which had enough locations as it was, but then tried to mix it up a bit by adding a goat!  Check him out here. Anyway, here is the video.  Hope you like!

Last weekend of Gallery Show

Well I totally forgot to post about this, but some other photographers and I did a gallery show in Long Beach, CA this past month.  It is coming to a close this weekend, so if you are in the area this week, come by and check out the work, from now until this Saturday night, March 29.  I have 5 prints up for sale (40x30in).  Other photographers include Lisa Johnson, Pamela Littky, Bryan Sheffield, Neil Visel, Tim Harmon, Leann Mueller, and Kevin Knight.  Here is the address:

Strobist and Lightsource Interviews!

I was just interviewed by two photo websites this past month.  I did a written interview with David Hobby of strobist.blogspot.com and an audio podcast with the Lightsource guys.  Here are the links to both.  Hopefully there is some information in there that can be helpful to those getting into the business.  I apologize in advance if I came across too cynical or harsh.  I did them both during a long and frustrating weeks of assignments.  Ok, enough disclaimers, here there are...

Wavorly Music Video

So it's been years since I've done any film directing, but I'm going to be trying to do more this year.  We shot a video for the band Wavorly the first week of December here in Nashville.  My friend Caleb did the camera work and pal Jonathan produced.  This was pretty much the first time any of us have done this.  We all three worked our butts off on a little set built off the back side of a barn.  We shot it digitally, with practically no budget.  The whole production was pretty last minute, but I'm happy with how it turned out.  Here is a link to the video and a few set-building shots.  Stay tuned for more videos!

Halo 3 night!

This past Saturday night, I took a much needed break from editing, call some friends, and 10 of us got together for a Halo 3 night.  (Seriously, Halo 3 is the new poker!)  My friend Josh brought over his projector and my friend Loren brought over his xbox.  We played some 4 on 4.  Here is a cell phone video...  (I realized this has nothing to do with photography!)
